Cymru 1914-18: Y Rhyfel Mawr a’r profiad Cymreig

#CymruWW1

Rhoi Hanes Cymru a’r Rhyfel Mawr Ar-lein

Mae prosiect a arweinir gan Lyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru mewn cydweithrediad â llyfrgelloedd, casgliadau arbennig ac archifau Cymru wedi derbyn £500,000 gan y Cydbwyllgor Systemau Gwybodaeth, JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee) i ddigido ar raddfa enfawr, ffynonellau gwreiddiol yn ymwneud â’r Rhyfel Mawr.

Bydd y prosiect yn creu casgliad digidol unigryw a digymar o hanes cudd y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf a sut y bu iddo effeithio ar holl fywyd Cymru, ei hiaith a’i diwylliant. Bydd y prosiect yn digido ffynonellau printiedig a llawysgrifol yn ogystal â deunydd ffilm, sain a ffotograffau. Mae’r ffynonellau yma, ar hyn o’r bryd, ar wasgar ac yn aml yn anghyraeddadwy, ond gyda’i gilydd byddant yn creu adnodd unigryw a hanfodol i ymchwilwyr, myfyrwyr a phobl Cymru a thu hwnt. Bydd y casgliad digidol ar gael ar wefan fydd â theclyn cyfieithu er mwyn i’r di-Gymraeg ddeall ysgrifau yn y Gymraeg.

‘Bydd y wefan yn adnodd amhrisiadwy ar gyfer dysgu, ymchwil a chofio a bydd ar gael ar-lein mewn pryd ar gyfer canmlwyddiant dechrau’r Rhyfel,’ meddai Andrew Green, Llyfrgellydd y Llyfrgell Genedlaethol. ‘Mae hwn yn enghraifft wych o gydweithio ar draws llyfrgelloedd, archifau a chasgliadau arbennig Cymru i gyflwyno’r hanesion unigryw hyn i’r gynulleidfa ehangaf posibl, drwy eu digido.’

Datblygwyd y prosiect gan Fforwm Llyfrgelloedd Addysg Uwch Cymru (WHELF). Daw’r casgliadau o Lyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru; Casgliadau Arbennig Prifysgol Aberystwyth; Casgliadau Arbennig Prifysgol Bangor; Casgliadau Arbennig Prifysgol y Drindod Dewi Sant; Llyfrgell Prifysgol Caerdydd; Archifau BBC Cymru Wales ac archifau lleol sy’n aelodau o Gyngor Archifau a Chofnodion Cymru (ARCW). Bydd Casgliad y Werin Cymru yn casglu’r cynnwys a gynhyrchir gan gymunedau, haneswyr lleol a haneswyr teulu. Byddant hefyd yn digido eitemau o gasgliadau personol wrth deithio ar draws Cymru yn digido deunydd o bwys. Drwy wneud hyn byddant yn ychwanegu a chryfhau casgliadau’r partneriaid Addysg Uwch gan greu casgliad digidol cyflawn, unedig, i gynrychioli profiad y genedl Gymreig yn ystod y Rhyfel Mawr.

Mae’r cynnwys sydd i’w ddigido wedi ei ddethol mewn cydweithrediad ag academyddion Cymru a thu hwnt, a bydd gwaddol digidol y prosiect yn arwain at ymchwil newydd am Gymru a’r Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf.

Dywedodd Paola Marchionni, Rheolwr Prosiect JISC, ‘Drwy ddigido a chydweithio bydd y prosiect hwn yn dod a chasgliad rhyfeddol o archifau ynghŷd i un lle. Mae’n addo bod yn ganolfan bwysig ar gyfer ymchwilwyr neu fyfyrwyr sydd am edrych ar brofiad Cymru a’r Rhyfel Mawr. Rydym yn falch iawn i gefnogi’r prosiect yma sy’n cyd-fynd â nifer o brosiectau eraill a ariennir gan JISC sy’n ymwneud â’r Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf yn ogystal â gweithgareddau cofio yng Nghymru, Prydain ac yn rhyngwladol.’ JISC yw consortiwm technolegol ar gyfer addysg uwch a phellach.

Cost y prosiect digido yma fydd £987,916. Daw £500,000 o’r gyllideb raglen cynnwys JISC ar gyfer 2011-13. Codir gweddill yr arian drwy gyfraniad sefydliadol bunt am bunt partneriaid y prosiect.

Mae’r prosiect yn cychwyn ym mis Chwefror 2012 a lansir yr adnoddau ar-lein ym Mehefin 2013.

Welsh experience of World War One

Welsh history of WW1 to go online

A project led by the National Library of Wales in partnership with the Roderic Bowen Library and Archives with libraries, and other special collections, and archives of Wales has received £500,000 in funding from the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) for mass digitisation of primary sources relating to World War One.

The project will make available a unique digital collection revealing the hidden history of World War One as it affected all aspects of Welsh life, language and culture. The project will digitise printed and manuscript sources as well as moving image, audio and photographic material. These source materials are presently fragmented and frequently inaccessible, yet collectively they form a unique resource of vital interest to researchers, students, and the public in Wales and beyond. The digital collection will be available through a website, and enhanced through the use of translation tools to enable broadest access.

‘The online resource will provide an invaluable resource for teaching, research, and commemoration in time for the 100th anniversary of the start of the War,’ said Andrew Green, Librarian of the National Library of Wales. ‘This is a fantastic example of collaboration across the libraries, archives and special collections of Wales to make our unique materials available to the widest international audience via digitization.’

The project has been developed by WHELF (the Welsh Higher Education Libraries Forum). Collections to be digitised are from the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth University Special Collections, Bangor University Special Collections, Trinity St David’s Special Collections, Cardiff University Library, the Archives of BBC Cymru Wales and archives and local records offices that are members of ARCW (Archives and Records Council, Wales). The People’s Collection Wales will gather content generated by communities and local and family historians. It will also digitise and in personal collections via outreach and targeted digitisation of significant material to enhance and complement the collections of the higher education partners. The unified, mass digital collection that will be created will represent the experience of the entire Welsh nation during World War One.

The content to be digitised has been selected in collaboration with academics in Wales and beyond, and the digital outputs of the project will lead to new research findings about Wales in World War One.

Paola Marchionni, JISC programme manager, said: “Through digitisation and collaborative working this project will bring together an impressive array of scattered content into one place and promises to become a key reference point for researchers and students looking at the Welsh experience of World War One. JISC is very proud to support this project which will also complement a number of other JISC funded World War One commemoration activities as well as national and international initiatives.” JISC is the UK's technology consortium for higher and further education.

The total cost of the digitisation project is £987,916. £500,000 in funding has been provided by the JISC Content programme 2011-13. Matched funding has been provided from institutional contributions from the project partners.

The project begins in February 2012, and the online resource will be launched in June 2013.
