Google Europe Scholarship for Students with Disabilities

Google is excited to announce the most recent addition to their scholarship programs in Europe, the Google Europe Scholarship for Students with Disabilities. This scholarship is designed for students with disabilities studying Computer Science or Computer Engineering who have shown academic strength and demonstrated a passion for computer science.

Get creative!

The 2010 Aesthetica Creative Works Competition is now open for entries! There are three categories in the competition: Artwork & Photography, Poetry and Fiction and the winners and finalists from each category will be published in the Aesthetica Creative Works Annual 2011. The winners will also each receive £500. The competition is internationally recognised for identifying new artists and bringing them to global attention and previous finalists have achieved success and accolades including writing commissions from Channel 4 and selection to represent Australia in the Florence Biennale.

Last year we had a fantastic response from students:

· 2009 Artwork Winner was a 17 year old student.
· Students also placed as finalists in all three categories in both 2009 and 2010.

Are you a budding film maker?

Aesthetica has recently launched an international short film competition, which is now open for entries. Leading the search for filmmakers who are driving the genre of short film forward through inspirational and innovative works the competition provides an opportunity for both new and experienced filmmakers to have their work broadcast to a wider audience. All genres of film are being accepted: drama, documentary, music video, animation, satire, comedy, artists' film and anything else you can think of! This is a great opportunity for students to get creative on a film project and a chance to get their work showcased nationally. This award offers winners and runners-up a fantastic prize package, including:

Screenings of your film at: The National Media Museum (Bradford), Rushes Soho Shorts Film Festival (London), Glasgow Film Festival, Kerry Film Festival (Ireland), Glimmer: Hull Film Festival, Project Space Leeds and on the Aesthetica website.
£500 first prize, £250 runner-up.
12 months membership with Shooting People.
Collection of film books from Wallflower Press.
Weekend course with Raindance.
Winner and 10 runners-up to be included on a DVD that will go to all Aesthetica readers.

Films should be up to 25 minutes long.

World Book Day 2010



World Book Day is the biggest annual celebration of books and reading in the UK and Ireland. It rakes place this year on Thursday 4th March.

'Read to a Million Kids', sponsored by Renaissance Learning, is a brand new initiative for World Book Day 2010. The 11 £1 Book stories, read by their authors or actors, will be broadcast online during World Book Day.

Tim Berners-Lee unveils government data project



Web founder Sir Tim Berners-Lee has unveiled his latest venture for the UK government, which offers the public better access to official data.


A new website, data.gov.uk, will offer reams of public sector data, ranging from traffic statistics to crime figures, for private or commercial use.


The target is to kickstart a new wave of services that find novel ways to make use of the information.


Sir Tim was hired by PM Gordon Brown in June 2009 to oversee the project.

Windows 7 available in Welsh today



Windows 7 available in Welsh

Free of charge, and fully paid for by Microsoft, a Language Interface Pack (LIP) for all versions of Microsoft Windows 7 has today been made available for download, thanks to collaboration between Microsoft and the Welsh Language Board.

Welsh History Review



This journal is now available from the Welsh Journals Online project based @ the National Library of Wales.


Welsh Journals Online provides free access to scholarship from Wales. The back-numbers of up to 50 titles will be available here, ranging from academic and scientific publications to literary and popular magazines. The presentation of the journals on the web has been undertaken by the National Library of Wales with support from JISC and Welsh Assembly Government and the cooperation of publishers and authors.


Complete runs of each title have been included; the earliest is an unnumbered volume of Y Cymmrodor (1821). The most recent issue available depends on the publisher, and will vary from title to title. Occasional papers, Index volumes and Monographs are sometimes included.
Newspapers, and publications from outside the UK, have not been included in the resource at present, and nor have the 70 publications whose publishers have not yet given permission. Electronic publications are not included.


Some pages have been blanked out for copyright reasons on the website.

'The heart of soap' - 'Old media.. New media'

What is the essence of a continuing soap opera series and how does the medium of soap effect story telling? ‘The Heart of Soap’ is a story conference in which an episode of an existing soap opera (Written by Lucy Gough) will be used as a spring board for your creativity.

Youngest World War II service casualty identified



A 14-year-old boy has been confirmed as the UK's youngest known service member to have been killed in WWII.
Reginald Earnshaw was aged 14 years and 152 days when he died under enemy fire on the SS North Devon on 6 July 1941.
The merchant navy cabin boy had lied about his age, claiming he was 15, so he could join the war effort.
